A major update has come regarding the investigation of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. NDTV has come to know from sources that a part of the black box of the plane found at the accident site appears to be very damaged. This may have happened due to the strong impact after the plane crashed. It is being considered to send it to America, Britain as well as Singapore for investigation. The other part of the black box can be examined in a lab in India itself.
It is worth noting that Air India flight AI-171 crashed 36 seconds after flying from Ahmedabad to London on June 12. The black box was recovered from the wreckage of the Dreamliner plane. It has two parts. Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR). These are collectively called the black box. This black box can provide solid information about the cause of the accident. In this black box, the activities of the last moments of the flight such as altitude, speed and information about the conversation in the cockpit are recorded.
Currently, both these instruments of the black box are under the strict supervision of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). NDTV has come to know from sources that their outer surface has been damaged due to the crash. In such a situation, if work is not done carefully, then there can be a risk of data getting damaged. It has been found that one of the two instruments of the black box seems to be more damaged. Now it has to be decided where to send them for investigation.
NDTV has received information from sources related to the investigation that the places where sending the black box is being considered include America, UK, Singapore as well as HAL facility located in Lucknow, India. Options also include America’s NTSB, UK’s Civil Aviation Authority and Singapore.
It has been found that the outer part of the black box has suffered more damage. It is possible that it may have had an impact inside as well. In such a situation, its data needs to be extracted very carefully. The entire data of the digital flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder is in binary form. Meaning, it is saved in the format of 0 and 1 like in a computer. This data is transferred from binary to engineering format for investigation. Only then information can be obtained. Based on this information, the real cause of the accident is found out.
According to the information received by NDTV, experts do not want to take any risk considering the condition of the black box. They want it to be opened in a safe manner so that the data saved inside is not damaged. For this, options like America, Britain and Singapore are being considered.
It has been found that the second black box has suffered less damage. It is in a safe condition. In such a situation, it is believed that the black box can be examined in India itself. This responsibility can be handed over to the HAL facility located in Lucknow. However, the final decision will be taken only after looking at every kind of possible danger.
