The US launched a major military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear program. On 21 June 2025, the US Navy’s guided-missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729) fired 30 Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (TLAM) at Iran’s two major nuclear sites, Natanz and Isfahan.
Simultaneously, a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber dropped two GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs on Natanz. The attack was carried out to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions and ensure Israel’s security.

USS Georgia: America’s deadly submarine
USS Georgia (SSGN 729) is an Ohio-class guided-missile submarine designed by the US Navy for precision and long-range strikes. The submarine can carry 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, making it one of the world’s deadliest maritime weapon systems. Its stealth technology enables it to evade enemy radars, making it adept at carrying out covert attacks.
Features of USS Georgia
Length: 560 feet (170 meters).
Weight: 18,750 tonnes (underwater).
Missile capability: 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and space for 66 Special Operations Forces.
Crew: 155 sailors and officers.
Propulsion: Nuclear reactor, which gives it the ability to stay underwater for long periods of time.
Speed: 20+ knots (about 37 km/h).
The USS Georgia has been deployed to the Middle East region since September 2024 and in this operation it fired missiles from a distance of about 400 miles (640 kilometers) from the Persian Gulf.
Tomahawk cruise missile: The epitome of accuracy
The Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) is a US long-range, subsonic cruise missile designed for precision strikes. The missile can be launched from ships and submarines and operates in all weather conditions.

Features of Tomahawk
Range: 2,500 kilometres, allowing it to easily reach targets in Iran.
Guidance system: GPS, TERCOM (Terrain
Contour Matching) and DSMAC (Digital Scene-Matching Area Correlation) which help it to aim accurately.
Warhead: 1,000 pounds (450 kg) of conventional explosive or cluster munition.
Speed: 880 km/h (550 mph).
Feature: It flies at low altitude, which reduces the chances of being detected by radar.
Tomahawk missiles were ideal for destroying the surface and underground structures at Natanz and Isfahan, as they could hit large areas with pinpoint accuracy.
Attack on Natanz and Isfahan: Details of the Operation
On the morning of June 21, 2025, the US launched a complex and secret military operation, targeting the Natanz, Isfahan and Fordo nuclear bases. In this operation, the USS Georgia fired 30 Tomahawk missiles, which focused on the following targets…
Natanj
Importance: Natanz is Iran’s largest uranium enrichment center, built at a depth of 40 meters. It is important in enriching uranium to make nuclear weapons.
Attack details: Fired from USS Georgia
Tomahawk missiles targeted Natanz’s superstructure and underground centrifuge cascades. Additionally, a B-2 stealth bomber dropped two GBU-57 MOP bombs on Natanz, which are capable of penetrating deep bunkers.
Damage: Upper buildings and some centrifuges were damaged, but Iran claimed the facility did not suffer “irreparable damage”.
Isfahan
Importance: Isfahan has a facility for converting uranium into nuclear fuel, a vital part of Iran’s nuclear programme.
Details of the attack: Tomahawk missiles hit Isfahan
Major buildings were targeted. Six buildings were damaged, but according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), there was no radioactive leak.
Special Note: US military sources said that the Isfahan underground complex was deeper and stronger than expected, which made it impossible to destroy it completely.

Fordo
Importance: Fordo is built at a depth of 80 meters below the mountains, making it the most secure nuclear facility.
Details of the attack: The base was hit by six B-2 Stealth fighters
The bombers hit the target, dropping 12 GBU-57 MOP bombs. These bombs are specially designed to destroy deep bunkers.
Damage: US President Donald Trump claimed Fordow was “totally destroyed”, but Israeli army radio said total destruction was unlikely.
Operation strategy
This operation was coordinated by the US and Israel. Its purpose was to weaken Iran’s ability to make nuclear weapons.
Highlights of the operation were…
Secret plan: The strikes were so secret that even when the B-2 bombers and USS Georgia launched the attacks, many news channels were speculating that Trump was “considering options.”
- B-2’s stealth technology: B-2 bombers flew for 37 hours
- Flew non-stop. Dodged Iran’s Russian-made air defense system.
Status of USS Georgia: The submarine sank in the Persian Gulf Missiles were fired from a distance of 400 miles, depriving Iran of the opportunity to retaliate.
Accuracy and power: Tomahawk missiles have the upper hand destroyed structures, while the GBU-57 MOP targeted deep bunkers.
