Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Accra on Wednesday on a state visit to Ghana. As a special honour, on his arrival at the airport, the Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial welcome by the President of Ghana His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. This honour reflects the strong and historic ties of friendship between the two countries.

PM Modi’s first visit to African nation

The Prime Minister’s visit to Ghana is the first such visit in the last three decades. This historic visit will further deepen the partnership between India and Ghana, and underline India’s commitment to strengthen ties with Africa and global south partners.

At the same time, a group of young children of Ghana welcomed PM Modi with “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”. Hundreds of people, including locals, started chanting “Modi-Modi”, “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram” as soon as PM Modi arrived at the hotel.

Over 15,000 Indians in Ghana

This is PM Modi’s first bilateral visit to the African nation and the first prime ministerial visit from India to Ghana after three decades. More than 15,000 Indians live in the West African country, some of whom have been in Ghana for more than 70 years. Some families are now fourth generation in Ghana and some have even acquired Ghanaian citizenship.

During the talks, PM Modi was seen holding a child in his lap, which became an unforgettable moment for the Indian family. After the welcome, the two leaders sat down for talks at the Jubilee Lounge of the airport.
