There is a need to take special care of children during monsoon rains. Serious diseases like diarrhea and jaundice are gripping children in this season. The number of sick children reaching Doon Hospital in Dehradun has increased. In such a situation, Dr. Ashok, Head of the Pediatrics Department of Doon Hospital, has told the ways to avoid these diseases in the rainy season.

Jaundice and diarrhea increased in rainy season: Contaminated water and unhygienic food are also spoiling the health of children in this season. Usually the rainy season brings many serious diseases. Consumption of stale food and contaminated water is taking a toll on the health of children. These days, more than twenty children suffering from jaundice and diarrhea are coming to the pediatrics department of Doon Hospital every day. From this, it can be easily guessed that the health of children is deteriorating during monsoon in the capital Dehradun.

These are the symptoms of jaundice: Dr. Ashok Kumar, HOD of the Pediatric Department of Doon Hospital, said that-

In this season, children like to go out of the house and get wet in the rain. Also, during the monsoon season, the chances of contaminated water mixing with the supply water increase. Drinking such contaminated water causes symptoms of jaundice in children. Vomiting, stomach ache, yellow urine, lack of appetite etc. are common symptoms of jaundice. Apart from this, yellowness also starts appearing in the eyes.

These are the symptoms of diarrhea: According to Dr Ashok, this disease can be avoided by drinking boiled and filtered water. Especially children should be given boiled water only. He told that children suffering from diarrhea are also reaching the hospital daily. He told that-

Stomach pain, cramps, vomiting, frequent thin watery stools are the symptoms of diarrhea. Most of the parents of children are coming to Doon Hospital with these complaints. He advised that children up to 6 months of age should be fed only mother’s milk. Do not feed milk from a bottle. If you have to feed packaged milk to children, then always prepare fresh milk.

Advice not to eat contaminated food: Specialist doctors of Doon Hospital said that teenagers up to 16 years of age who consume contaminated food and water available outside carts etc. are also reaching the hospital with complaints of jaundice. Many of these patients are even being admitted.
