Earthquakes in Japan are not a new thing. But this time the danger can be bigger. A ‘megaquake’ is going to wreak havoc in Japan. The possibility of a megaquake in the Nankai Trough has created a stir in Japan.

According to new estimates, about three lakh deaths can occur due to this earthquake. Also, a loss of two trillion dollars i.e. about 167 lakh crore rupees has been feared. Let us tell you that this loss can be much more than the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

Megaquake is going to come in Japan!

The Nankai Trough is a 500-mile long sea trench located in the Pacific Ocean near the south-eastern coast of Japan. Here the Philippine Sea plate is sliding under the Eurasian plate. Due to which big earthquakes can occur.

History is a witness that a big earthquake occurs in this area every 100 to 200 years. The last time an earthquake occurred here was in the year 1946. In January, a report was prepared by a committee of the Japanese government on the possibility of earthquake.

In which the possibility of an earthquake of magnitude eight or more in the next 30 years was stated to be 75-82%. Along with this, the March report said that 2,98,000 people can die in the devastation caused by this. Apart from this, 23.5 lakh buildings can collapse.

3,00,000 people likely to die

As predicted, a megaquake will occur. If it comes, then devastation will start in two minutes in some areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued an alert saying that 10 meter high tsunami waves can hit Tokyo and other coastal provinces. About 2,15,000 people can die in the devastation caused by this. On the other hand, about 73,000 people can die due to the collapse of buildings. Along with this, about 8,700 people can die due to fire.

How prepared is Japan?

Let us tell you that in 2014, a national disaster prevention plan was made by the Japan Central Disaster Management Council. At that time it was estimated that the earthquake would take the lives of 3,32,000 people and destroy 25 lakh buildings. At that time, the government had set a target of reducing deaths by 80% and damage to buildings by 50% in 10 years. But it was accepted by the cabinet officer that this target has failed. The current measures can reduce deaths by only 20 percent.

The government decided to implement the old targets in a meeting on July 1. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said, “Nations, municipalities, companies and non-profit organizations should unite and take steps to save as many lives as possible.”

What is the new plan?

Japan has said that it will implement several plans. Which includes the rapid construction of embankments and tsunami-resistant evacuation buildings. Also, there will be regular emergency drills across the country. Along with this, instructions have also been given to make arrangements for storage of essential goods. Along with this, it has been asked to prepare the infrastructure to avoid earthquake.

Preparation for the great earthquake is in full swing

The government has declared 723 cities and towns in more than 30 areas of Japan as “disaster preparedness areas”. All these places are spread from Ibaraki to Okinawa. There is a danger of a strong earthquake (6 magnitude or more) and a tsunami of more than 3 meters in the future.

Now the local governments of these areas will have to make new preparations. For example, if a major disaster occurs, how will people be evacuated safely from hospitals and big buildings? This will have to be planned in advance. Along with this, keeping in mind the weaknesses of the area, a strong plan will have to be prepared in collaboration with the central government so that the damage is minimized in any emergency.
