The arrest has been made on the basis of an extradition request jointly filed by India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The extradition request was made under Criminal Conspiracy Section 120B, 201 Indian Penal Code and 3 Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002. Along with Nirav Modi, Nehal Modi is also accused of scamming thousands of crores of rupees from Punjab National Bank. According to the investigation of CBI and ED, his brother Nehal Modi played an important role in carrying out this scam of Nirav Modi. The investigating agencies are also trying to extradite Nirav Modi from UK. The next date of hearing is July 17. In this, Nehal Modi can also appeal for bail and the US authorities will oppose it on the argument of Indian agencies.

What are the charges against Nehal Modi

The extradition proceedings by US prosecutors are based on two criminal charges. The first of these is a money laundering case, which is registered under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. While the second is a case of criminal conspiracy, which is under Section 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code.

Nehal Modi (46) is accused in a fraud case of about Rs 13,000 crore related to Punjab National Bank (PNB) in India. This case is considered to be one of the biggest banking scams in the country.
