Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s magic has worked on the Caribbean country Trinidad and Tobago. This country has openly supported India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The Caribbean country announced this during PM Modi’s visit.
After talks between PM Modi and his counterpart Kamala Prasad-Bissessar, India and Trinidad and Tobago have signed 6 agreements to increase cooperation in many areas including infrastructure and pharmaceuticals. At the same time, Prime Minister Modi announced the issuance of Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards to up to the sixth generation of the Indian community living in Trinidad and Tobago. More than 40 percent of the population in this country is of Indian origin.
Emphasis on the need for reforms in the United Nations
According to the joint statement issued on Saturday, the important thing is that Trinidad and Tobago have confirmed their full support to India for permanent membership in the expanded United Nations Security Council. While holding in-depth discussions on global issues, Modi and Bissessar stressed the need for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations, including the expansion of the UN Security Council, to better reflect current realities.
India will also support for temporary seat
Acknowledging the growing geopolitical tensions and global conflicts, the two leaders said dialogue and diplomacy is the way forward, the joint statement said. It was also agreed that India will support Trinidad and Tobago’s candidature for a temporary seat in the United Nations Security Council for 2027-28 and the Caribbean country will support New Delhi’s bid for 2028-29.
Also got support on the issue of terrorism
The Foreign Ministry said, “The Prime Minister’s historic visit to Trinidad and Tobago has given a boost to the special relations between the two countries.” The Foreign Ministry also said, “The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”
