Akash Deep bowled brilliantly in the second Test against England and took 10 wickets in the match. He took four wickets in the first innings and 6 wickets in the second innings. Akash Deep also took the wicket of Joe Root during his stormy bowling, which caused a lot of uproar. Akash Deep bowled Joe Root with a wonderful ball in the second innings. When the replay was seen, it was found that Akash Deep’s back foot was on the side crease, after which some people alleged that this ball was a no ball. Many cricket experts said that this ball was correct, but now the MCC, the body that makes the rules of cricket, has given its decision on this.
MCC’s decision on Akash Deep’s ball
MCC made it clear that where the back foot lands first during bowling is the most important. If the foot lands on the return crease for the first time and after that it slips and goes forward, then it does not matter. MCC spokesperson said, ‘The ball bowled by Akash Deep on the fourth day of India’s Test against England that got Joe Root out was considered a no ball by some fans and commentators. Some part of his back foot was seen touching the ground outside the return crease, yet the third umpire did not give it a no ball, which was legally the right decision.’
MCC cited law 21.5.1 related to back foot no-ball and said, ‘In the delivery stride, the back foot of the bowler should stay inside the return crease and should not touch it, MCC has always considered the first contact of the back foot as the first contact. If after that that foot goes outside that crease or touches it, then it will not be a no ball.’ Therefore, Akash Deep’s ball was not considered a no ball.
Akash Deep’s ball changed the match
This ball of Akash Deep laid the foundation for winning the match for Team India because Joe Root’s wicket fell on this ball. Joe Root is England’s number 1 batsman and with his wicket, the defeat of the English team was almost certain. Later, Akash Deep wreaked havoc and took the feat of taking five wickets for the first time in his career. India defeated England by 336 runs in the second match and now the series is tied at 1-1. The third Test of the series will start on July 10 at Lord’s.
