Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched a dangerous attack on a bulk carrier ship called Magic Seas in the Red Sea on 6 July 2025. The ship was flying the Liberian flag and was Greek-owned. The Houthis attacked it with drones, missiles, rocket-launchers and small arms. Within moments, the ship caught fire and after a massive explosion, it broke into two pieces and sank.

A video of the attack was also released
The Houthi rebels also released a video of the attack, in which loud explosions can be seen on the ship. In the video, the ship is seen burning and finally sinking into the sea. The Houthis have claimed responsibility for the attack and said that the ship was violating their blockade imposed on Israel.

3 killed, several injured
The European Union’s naval mission ‘Operation Aspides’ confirmed on Tuesday that 3 sailors were killed and 2 injured in the attack, one of whom lost his leg. The 22 crew members on the ship jumped off the ship to save their lives and were later rescued safely. Armed security personnel retaliated but could not prevent the loss.

Setback to global trade
The attack took place when the ship was heading towards the Suez Canal. This area is very important for global trade. The Houthis’ repeated attacks on merchant ships are affecting the global supply chain. They say that these attacks are being carried out in support of Hamas, which is linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

International concern
After this attack, the international community has condemned this action and appealed to reduce the rising tension in the region. This attack not only challenges maritime security, but is also complicating the already complex geopolitical situation of the Middle East.
