A rumour was being spread on social media regarding the Panchayat elections that if a person’s name is registered in both urban and rural voter lists, then he will be ineligible to contest the Panchayat elections. It is also being propagated that the Commission has implemented some new rules in this regard. The Election Commission has taken cognizance of the news spreading on social media and denied these things.
Election Commission clarified
The Election Commission has said that the Panchayat elections in Uttarakhand are conducted completely under the provisions of the Uttarakhand Panchayati Raj Act, 2016. The Commission has not yet issued any new instructions regarding the eligibility of the candidate. Whatever rules and provisions are there, they are already included in the Act. All the conditions related to participating in the election, filing nomination and getting elected are clearly described in the relevant sections of the Act.
The Commission appealed not to pay attention to rumors
The Election Commission has said that the eligibility and ineligibility of the candidate at all three levels of Gram Panchayat, Kshetra Panchayat and District Panchayat is determined according to the law. The Commission has appealed to the general public, potential candidates and the media not to pay attention to these rumors spreading on social media. If anyone has any doubts about eligibility or rules, then they should directly contact the District Election Officer or the State Election Commission.
