The helicopter fell just minutes after takeoff
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), the helicopter took off from Tanjung Kupang Police Station at 9:51 am, but within a few minutes it had to make an emergency landing due to technical problems. This landing took place in the river.
Immediately after falling into the river, the Marine Police Force rescued all five crew members and brought them to the nearby Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) jetty. After this, everyone was sent for treatment.
No lives were lost in this accident, but the Malaysian civil aviation regulator has started an investigation considering it a serious aviation incident.
The helicopter that fell in the accident was 30 years old
The helicopter that fell victim to the accident was a French-made Airbus AS355N model. It is a light utility single-rotor helicopter. It was produced from 1975 to 2016 and is used by security forces, private charter and corporate services around the world.
This helicopter was delivered to the Malaysian police in 1996. New tenders were called to replace them in November 2023.
The accident raises questions about whether the service life of old aircraft has ended and whether such accidents can be prevented in the future.
The helicopter broke into two pieces in the US in April
In April this year, a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York, USA on Thursday. All 6 people sitting in the helicopter died in the accident.
Those killed included Agustin Escobar, CEO of engineering company Siemens, his wife Merce Camprubí and their three children. The children were aged 4, 5 and 11. The family was from Spain.
