US President Donald Trump has dropped his tariff bomb on Mexico and the European Union on Saturday (July 12, 2025). Trump has issued a letter regarding new tariffs for Mexico and the European Union. He has announced that from the beginning of next month i.e. from August 1, a 30 percent tariff will be imposed in the US on all goods imported from Mexico and the European Union.
The US President has shared the tariff letters sent to Mexico and the European Union on his social media platform Truth Social.
Donald Trump sends letter to the President of Mexico
Donald Trump has written a letter to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo regarding the tariffs to be imposed by the US. In the letter, Trump wrote, “It is a great honor for me that I am sending you this letter, which shows the strength and commitment of our trade relationship. Along with this, it also reflects the fact that the United States has agreed to continue working closely with Mexico.” The letter further read, “Despite the strong ties between the two countries, the US has imposed tariffs on Mexico to deal with the fentanyl crisis spreading in the country. This crisis has come to the fore in part due to Mexico’s failure to stop the cartels, which are made up of the most despicable people, who are filling our country with these drugs.”
Mexico helped me, but that is not enough – Trump
At the same time, Donald Trump also said in the letter, “Mexico has been helping me in border security, but what Mexico has done is not enough. Mexico has not yet been able to stop the cartels that are trying to make the whole of North America a narco-trafficking playground and obviously, I cannot allow this to happen!”
He said, “From August 1, 2025, the US will impose a 30 percent tariff on all goods coming from Mexico, which will be separate from all other sectoral tariffs.
Trump wrote a letter to the President of the European Commission
US President Donald Trump has also sent a letter to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen regarding the US tariff. Trump said at the beginning of the letter, “We will impose a tariff of only 30% on goods sent from the European Union to the US from August 1, 2025, which will be separate from all sectoral tariffs. In addition, goods that are transshipped to avoid higher rates will be subject to higher tariffs.”
Trump said in his letter that the 30 percent figure is far below the number needed to close the gap in the US trade deficit with the EU.
“As you know, the European Commission will not impose any tariffs if all companies in the EU or within the EU decide to manufacture their products in the US. In fact, we will do everything possible to obtain all approvals quickly, professionally and consistently, in other words, within a matter of weeks,” he said.
