Every day some news goes viral on social media. This time 500 rupee notes are on target. A post is becoming increasingly viral on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook in which it is being said that after September 30, 2025, 500 rupee notes will stop coming out in ATMs.
Not only this, it is also being said in the same viral message that RBI has instructed all the banks to now put only 100 and 200 rupee notes in ATMs. However, this claim is also true to some extent. Let’s know the whole truth.
Will 500 rupee notes stop getting in ATMs from September? 500 Rupees Note in Atm
The rumor about this viral news spread so much that the Press Information Bureau (PIB) itself had to come forward. PIB has called this claim completely fake. It has also been clarified that RBI has not given any such order.
The government has appealed to the people not to trust such misleading messages and take any information only from official government sources. 500 rupee notes are completely valid as before and will remain in circulation.
What has RBI changed?
Now the question arises that what is the truth then? Actually RBI has issued a new guideline according to which by 30 September 2025, at least 75% of the notes in the ATMs of all banks should be of small value i.e. 100 and 200 rupees. This figure will be increased to 90% by 31 March 2026.
The purpose of this is that the general public should not have shortage of change and more convenient transactions can be done. This change can prove to be very beneficial especially for small shopkeepers and in rural areas.
