Why was a tsunami warning issued?

According to a report by The Guardian, the initial waves were expected to reach a village called Sand Point, where about 580 people live. For this reason, a tsunami warning was issued as a precaution. About an hour after the quake, Alaska Emergency Management Department spokesman Jeremy Zidek told The Guardian, “We’ve seen earthquakes in this area before that haven’t generated any major tsunami waves, but we’re taking it seriously this time. We’re following our procedures. We’re making sure people are informed so they have a timely evacuation plan.”

Officials were also instructed to evacuate people in other areas, such as King Cove and Analaska, to ensure precautionary safety before any potential danger.
