Before the assembly elections in Bihar, people have hit the jackpot. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is making big announcements and making a flurry of promises. In this sequence, he said on Thursday that the people of the state will get 125 units of free electricity from August 1. 1 crore 67 lakh families will get the benefit of this. Before knowing how much the people of the state will benefit from this announcement of the Nitish government, let us know the statement of the Chief Minister.

Giving relief to the people, CM Nitish said, ‘We have been providing electricity to everyone at cheap rates from the very beginning. Now we have decided that from August 1, 2025, i.e. from the bill of the month of July, all the domestic consumers of the state will not have to pay any money for electricity up to 125 units. This will benefit a total of 1 crore 67 lakh families of the state. We have also decided that in the next three years, by taking consent from all these domestic consumers, benefits will be given by installing solar power plants on the roofs of their houses or at the nearest public place.’

What is the electricity rate in Bihar right now?

The per unit electricity rate in Bihar varies based on the consumer category and usage. According to NoBroker, for domestic (DS-I) consumers, it is Rs 7.57 per unit for the first 50 units and Rs 8.11 per unit for usage beyond 50 units. For DS-II (demand-based domestic) consumers, it is Rs 7.57 per unit, including a fixed charge of Rs 80 per kWh or per month. Domestic Consumers (DS-1)

  • Fixed charge – Rs 40 per kWh

Domestic Consumers (DS-2)

  • Energy Charge – Rs 7.57 per unit

A combined discount of 79 paise per unit is available, which includes 54 paise from DS-1 slab revision and additional 25 paise as Smart Meter benefit.

Urban Domestic Consumers

  • First 100 units – Rs 7.42 per unit
  • Above 100 units – Rs 8.95 per unit

How much benefit from 125 units of free electricity?

In Bihar, the cost of electricity per unit is approximately Rs 7.50, so the cost of 125 units is Rs 937.50. This means that after the implementation of this scheme of Nitish government, every family will save at least Rs 900 to Rs 950.

On the step of Bihar government to provide 125 units of free electricity, a woman said that earlier we used to get electricity bill of Rs 600-800, but now it is free. We thank Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Modi for this. Now, the Rs 800 that we will save will help us meet our household needs like groceries, water and other essential expenses.

How much will the burden on the government increase?

The price of electricity per unit in Bihar is approximately Rs 7.50. Price of 125 units = 125 X 7.50 = Rs 937.50. 1 crore 67 lakh families will benefit. 937.50 X 16700000 = 1565 crore 62 lakh 50 thousand. This is the amount whose burden will fall on the Bihar government.
