The people of Gaza are struggling with Israeli air strikes and deepening humanitarian crisis. At the same time, the families of senior Hamas leaders and military commanders are quietly fleeing the war zone. Within a few weeks of the start of the Israeli attack on Gaza, the top leadership of Hamas had sent their families across the border to Turkey, Egypt, Iran and Qatar. In such a situation, now anger is raging against Hamas leaders in Gaza. Meanwhile, news has come that Samar Abu Jamar, the wife of top Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who fled with a fake passport and a lot of cash, has remarried in Turkey. Sinwar was killed by the Israeli army on 16 October 2024.

Samar Abu Jamar fled from Gaza to Turkey

According to several local sources, the families of top Hamas officials were smuggled out of the Gaza Strip in the early days of the war with the help of forged documents, military aid and foreign contacts. In January, the Israeli military released footage showing Samar Abu Jamar, the widow of Hamas military commander Yahya Sinwar, entering a Hamas tunnel with her children. Initial speculation led to her going underground. But local sources later told Israeli news outlet Ynet that Abu Jamar had left Gaza altogether and was living in Turkey.

“She is no longer here—she crossed the Rafah border using a fake passport,” one source said. They added that the operation involved “high-level coordination, logistical support and a large sum of money that ordinary Gazans do not have.” The source also said Abu Jamar remarried in Turkey a few months after Sinwar was killed by Israeli forces. The wedding was reportedly arranged by senior Hamas political bureau member Fathi Hammad, who has previously been linked to efforts to help Hamas figures and their families escape.

Controversy erupted over Samar Abu Jamar’s expensive bag

Last year, Abu Jamar faced criticism when a video showed her carrying an expensive Hermes Birkin handbag while hiding in a tunnel. Najwa Sinwar, the wife of Yahya Sinwar’s brother Muhammad Sinwar, is also missing. There is no public record of her whereabouts in recent months. Local sources believe she also left Gaza with her children, possibly to Turkey, before her husband’s death. Israeli security officials have confirmed that both women left Gaza via the Rafah crossing before their husbands were killed.
