There has been a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia after about five days. Both countries have agreed to ceasefire without any conditions. At least 36 people have been killed in this fighting so far and thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes. There has been a border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia for many decades. The reason for the current conflict is a Shiva temple, on which both countries claim. The International Court had ruled in favor of Cambodia regarding the Shiva temple, but Thailand has occupied the area around the Shiva temple. The ceasefire between Thailand and Malaysia has happened on the platform of ASEAN, which has once again proved the importance of this platform.
US President Donald Trump had threatened Thailand and Cambodia to end the war. Apart from this, he had warned both the countries on the basis of trade, but both the countries had rejected Donald Trump’s threat of ceasefire. Instead, Malaysia organised a meeting between the two countries on the ASEAN platform to mediate and after nearly 2 hours of continuous talks, both countries agreed to an unconditional ceasefire.
Announcement of ceasefire on ASEAN platform
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said that both countries have agreed to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire effective 24 hours from tonight, i.e. midnight of 28 July 2025, local time”. Let us tell you that Malaysia is currently the chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAMN) and a meeting was organised between the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia at the official residence of the Malaysian Prime Minister. This 2-hour meeting was successful and the firing that was going on for the last five days has now ended. India’s senior geo-strategist Brahma Chellaney wrote in a tweet that “What Donald Trump’s phone calls and trade threats failed to achieve has been achieved through ASEAN diplomacy. After two hours of face-to-face talks hosted by current ASEAN chair Malaysia, Cambodian PM and Thailand’s acting PM agreed to a ceasefire from midnight.”
Let us tell you that ASEAN is a regional organization of South-East Asian countries, which has great global importance. Currently, there are a total of 10 members – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. The purpose of this organization is to promote regional peace, cultural and social cooperation. Its biggest feature is that its focus is to maintain its sovereignty while avoiding the influence of external powers. It is one of the fastest growing organizations in the world. ASEAN has once again proved its importance by stopping the war between Cambodia and Thailand.
