On the instructions of Secretary Mining, a geological team constituted by the Industrial Development Department, Government of Uttarakhand, conducted a field visit to the disaster affected area Dharali-Harsil. The geological team conducted a geological inspection of the disaster affected village Dharali and studied the possible danger and preventive measures. The team observed that a local stream (Gadera) Telgad in Harshil, especially in the upper part in front of the town and near the army camp, became active due to heavy rainfall. The inspection conducted by the geological team revealed that the left bank of the Bhagirathi river was blocked by a saturated alluvial fan. Due to its high moisture content, the fan was weak, due to which heavy machinery such as JCB and Pokhland could not be deployed – the only equipment available locally. Manual labour resources were also limited.
Based on the field data and available resources, the geologists prepared an emergency scientific debris clearance and channelization plan to restore partial flow. The plan involved creating small diversion channels of about 9-12 inches depth to gradually release the stagnant water. The District Magistrate Uttarkashi along with the geological team inspected the Harsil lake area and the results of the action plan were found to be fruitful due to which the water level of the lake was controlled and the debris deposited in the lower parts was automatically disposed of by river erosion.
