Uttarakhand: Abbas Ansari gets big relief from High Court, two years sentence stayed, know whether by-election will not be held in Mau?

Abbas Ansari, MLA of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party and son of late strongman Mukhtar Ansari, has got a big relief from the Allahabad High Court in the hate speech case. The High Court on Wednesday stayed the two-year sentence given by the lower court. A single bench of Justice Sameer Jain pronounced this order after hearing the review petition of Abbas Ansari. The court said that the appeal pending in the lower court should be disposed of as per rules.

What was the matter?

After winning the 2022 assembly elections, Abbas Ansari had threatened the officials in a speech. In this case, the special MP-MLA court of Mau convicted him under sections 153A, 189, 506 and 171F of the IPC and sentenced him to two years in prison. A fine of two thousand rupees was also imposed. His election agent Mansoor Ansari, who was present on the stage during the speech, was also convicted and sentenced to six months.

Legislature was terminated

On June 1, 2025, Abbas Ansari’s assembly membership was terminated on the basis of punishment. The Election Commission had also started preparations for the by-election on Mau Sadar seat.

Relief from High Court

Now the High Court has given relief to Abbas Ansari by staying the sentence of the lower court. It is believed that after this his legislatorship will be restored and the proposed by-election on Mau Sadar seat may be postponed.
