Nurse Practitioner Midwifery Program approved in Uttarakhand, will be helpful in promoting safe motherhood

Uttarakhand has taken a historic step in the field of maternal and child health. The state government has approved the Nurse Practitioner Midwifery program. At the same time, Health Secretary Dr. R Rajesh Kumar said that this decision of the government will prove to be a better step towards reducing maternal and neonatal mortality and promoting safe motherhood. In fact, a state-level midwifery task force meeting was held in the secretariat on Monday.

In a meeting chaired by Health Secretary R Rajesh Kumar, approval was given to start the Nurse Practitioner Midwifery program in Uttarakhand. Let us tell you that the maternal mortality ratio of Uttarakhand is 104 per one lakh live births. Whereas at the national level it is 88 per one lakh live births. During the meeting, Health Secretary R Rajesh Kumar said that the launch of the Nurse Practitioner Midwifery program is a historic achievement for Uttarakhand. The Nurse Practitioner Midwifery program will improve the quality of maternal and child health services in the state and will reduce the mortality rate (MMR) of Uttarakhand.

Also said that, soon the first batch of 30 nurse practitioner midwives will be started. A detailed proposal for this will also be prepared soon. This 18-month special training program will be conducted at the State Midwifery Training Institute, Dehradun. After completing the training, GNM / B.Sc. Trained midwives with nursing background will be posted in selected government health institutions of the state. These trained midwives will provide quality, respectful and evidence-based maternity services in the institutions, which will make deliveries safe and improve the health of mothers and newborns.

In fact, the Nurse Practitioner Midwifery (NPM) program was started by the Government of India on 6 November 2019. The Nurse Practitioner Midwifery (NPM) program is an 18-month training course. Which trains registered nurses to meet the competencies set by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) for basic knowledge and practice of midwifery. So that the nurse is also enabled to provide safe, respectful and care-focused midwifery services. Registered nurses doing this course are also certified as Nurse Practitioner Midwife by the State Nursing Council.
