The cancer department of the capital’s largest government hospital, Doon Medical College, has become the center of chaos and mutual conflict these days. On one hand, there is a tussle between two senior doctors of the department regarding online leave, while on the other hand, due to the negligence of the department, a 79-year-old family member of a cabinet minister was not even admitted on time. Both these incidents have exposed the government health services.

Minister’s family member not admitted on time

There was delay in admitting a 79-year-old patient in the cancer department for three days. The doctors neither gave the right advice nor started the treatment process. Ultimately, when the situation worsened, the minister’s wife herself had to come to the hospital and plead. The family members were forced to get some tests and treatment done in a private hospital. Finally, the patient was admitted on August 4 under senior surgeon Dr. Abhay Kumar. The treatment continued till August 13. The family members said that if he had been admitted on time, the situation would not have become so serious.

Role of MS and HOD in question

Hospital’s MS Dr. RS Bisht, showing seriousness in the matter, issued a notice to the Head of Department (HOD) Dr. Daulat Singh on 24 and 26 July. But despite this, the situation did not improve. About 26 days later, the HOD settled the matter by issuing only a warning notice.

Conflict between doctors on online leave

Meanwhile, a dispute has come to the fore between two senior doctors of the department regarding online leave. A doctor alleges that his fellow doctor takes leave through online medium without prior notice and does not even give a written application, due to which the departmental work is affected. The complaint has reached the MS. Even before this, the dispute between the two doctors has reached the point of scuffle in the OPD.

Patients’ services most affected

Due to constant dispute and negligence, the services of patients in the cancer department are being affected. Delay in treatment of a serious disease like cancer is proving to be very painful for the patient and the family. Due to departmental disorder, the hospital management is also being criticized.

MS’s statement

MS Dr. RS Bisht admitted that there has been serious negligence and mismanagement in the department. He said that the concerned doctors and HODs have been warned about the holidays and lack of coordination. Looking at the seriousness of the matter, further strict action will also be taken.
