Trump imposed 25% additional tariff on India, to be implemented from midnight of 27 August

The United States has issued an official public notice of imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on imports from India. This new duty will come into effect from 12:01 am (EST) on August 27. The notice has been issued by the Department of Homeland Security through US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and is part of the implementation of Executive Order 14329 signed by President Donald Trump on August 6.

According to the order, US agencies were directed to respond to threats made to the United States by the government of the Russian Federation and the new tariffs on India were targeted as part of this policy. These additional tariffs will apply to a wide range of Indian products listed in the annexure of the notice. This tariff will also apply to goods shipped for consumption or removed from warehouses for consumption after the deadline.

New notice and effective date
CBP, under the US Department of Homeland Security, has clarified that the 25% additional tariff will come into effect from 12:01 am (EST) on August 27. The move is in line with Executive Order 14329, signed by President Donald Trump on August 6.

Scope of tariffs

An annexure issued with the notice includes a detailed list of Indian products that will be subject to new additional duties. These duties will apply to all consignments that file entry for consumption or are removed from warehouses for consumption after the prescribed deadline.

Trump targets Moscow’s trading partners

US President Donald Trump indicated that if an agreement is not reached, he could impose additional duties on countries trading with Russia or impose additional sanctions on Moscow. According to the warning, if no progress is made, very serious consequences can be seen in the coming weeks. So far, the US has refrained from similar measures on other major buyers of Russian oil, including China.

India’s response to Trump tariffs

In August this year, Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on goods coming from India. Which took the total tariff to 50%. This step was taken as a punishment for New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. Indian officials have described these so-called secondary tariffs as wrong and unreasonable and have expressed hope that progress in peace talks may eliminate the need for tariff hikes. It will make every effort to protect its national interests and termed the US move to increase overall tariffs by 50% as extremely unfortunate.
