The attempt to save tax has cost Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party Angela Rayner heavily. So much so that she had to resign from her post. Rayner resigned from her post on Friday. Actually the matter is related to the apartment she bought in Hove, where irregularities were found in tax payment.
Independent investigation found that she did not fully follow the ministerial code of conduct. However, the report also said that Rayner worked with honesty and dedication, but she should have taken expert tax advice.
“Wanted to pay the right tax” – Rayner
Rayner admitted that she paid less tax while buying the apartment. According to reports, she was able to save stamp duty tax of about 40,000 pounds (about Rs 47 lakh). In her resignation letter, Rayner wrote that I deeply regret that I did not consult tax experts. My intention was never to pay the wrong tax. I take full responsibility. He further said that this decision has been taken not only in view of the recommendations of the report but also the impact on his family.
British PM Starmer said – took the right decision
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer sent a handwritten letter accepting Rayner’s resignation. He said that I am sad that your tenure ended like this. You were right when you handed yourself over to the independent advisor and did the right thing when you implemented his recommendations.
Political journey put on hold
Rayner was not only the Deputy PM and Deputy Leader in the Labor Government but she also had the responsibility of the Housing Department. She was considered one of the most vocal leaders of the party and often attacked the opposition Conservative leaders for not complying with taxes. Now after her resignation, the Labor Party will have to elect a new Deputy Leader.
