Election Commission is preparing to implement SIR’s ‘Bihar Model’ across the country, a big meeting of election officers will be held

Top officials of the Election Commission will discuss preparations for the implementation of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter list at all India level with their representatives from the states next week. Officials said that the Commission has called a meeting of Chief Electoral Officers of the states on Wednesday. This is the third meeting of the Chief Electoral Officers of the states after Gyanesh Kumar took over as Chief Election Commissioner in February. However, officials said that the meeting to be held on September 10 is important because it will discuss the preparations for the special intensive revision of the voter list at the all India level.
Preparations to implement ‘Bihar model’ across the country
The Commission has said that after Bihar, special intensive revision of voter list will be done across the country. There are indications that this process will be started later this year and before the assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal in 2026. The purpose of SIR is to check the birthplace of illegal migrants and send them back. This step is important in view of the action taken against illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar and other countries in various states.
The voter list will be correct in all circumstances
Officials said that the Election Commission will start SIR across the country to discharge its constitutional duty to protect the purity of the voter lists. He said that under the special intensive revision, the election officers will go door-to-door to verify to ensure an error-free voter list. Amid allegations by opposition parties of manipulation of voter data to help the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Election Commission has taken additional steps under the intensive revision to ensure that the names of illegal immigrants are not recorded in the voter list.
These voters will have to give a new affidavit
An additional ‘declaration form’ has been introduced for the category of applicants wishing to become voters or coming from outside the state. They will have to give an affidavit that they were born in India before July 1, 1987 and will have to submit any document proving the date of birth and/or place of birth.
