A cloudburst caused widespread panic in Majada village, located five kilometers above Dehradun’s Sahasradhara, late Monday night. Around 1 a.m., the first thunder and a loud noise began shaking houses, sending people screaming and shouting. The situation seemed to ease after a while, but at 4 a.m., the earth shook again, and people realized that disaster was imminent.

Recalling the horrific scene, villagers are terrified

According to reports, Deepu, a resident of the village, said he tried to call people to safety by whistling and flashing a flashlight. He, along with his family and children, set out in the darkness, searching for a safe place. Another man, Jama, says, “It had barely been 15 minutes since we left the house when the water swept away our house. If we had stayed inside, we would have perished.”

Fears expressed that neighbors were buried under the debris

The fear of devastation is clearly visible on the faces of those who fled the village. In voices broken by fatigue and shock, the villagers repeatedly say, “Everything is destroyed.” They say neighbors who have lived together for decades may now be buried under the rubble. No one was able to help anyone because the disaster forced everyone to flee. The villagers are currently searching for safe places, but that terrifying night is forever etched in their hearts.
