New GST Rates: Will old stock also benefit from GST reduction? What if shopkeepers sell at the old MRP?

New GST Rates
With the start of Sharadiya Navratri, GST 2.0 (GST Rates) has also been implemented. This has led to the reduction in prices of many items, including everyday items. Yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, stating that 375 items have become cheaper due to this new GST.
These include items like ghee, cheese, snacks, dry fruits, TVs, ACs, refrigerators, and washing machines. However, after the implementation of these new rates, people are wondering whether discounts will be available on old packaging of goods in the market? What should be done if shopkeepers sell goods at the old rates? Let’s find out in this article.
New GST Rates: Only Two Slabs on GST from Today
With the new GST rates, 99 percent of goods have come under the 5% tax slab. From today, only two tax slabs remain: 5% and 18%. However, some items have been placed in the 40% tax slab. But the question arises: will the reduced MRP be visible on goods in the market? How will we know if the shopkeeper is offering a full discount or not? What if the shopkeeper is selling goods at the old MRP?
Will the reduced MRP be visible in the market from today?
No. You won’t see the reduced MRP on goods in the market from now on. If shopkeepers have old stock, you will see the old MRP. The government has clarified that it is not mandatory to put a sticker indicating the reduced rates on goods.
Will old stock not benefit from the GST reduction?
This is not the case. Even if you have old stock, you will still benefit from the new GST reduction. The government has clarified that starting September 22nd, all goods that have become cheaper after the GST rate reduction will be available at discounted prices. So, whether shopkeepers have old stock or new customers will get the goods at discounted prices.
Will shopkeepers incur losses by selling old stock at discounted prices?
Selling old stock at a lower price after the GST reduction is not a loss-making deal for the shopkeeper. According to the government, shopkeepers will adjust this when filing GST returns.
