Uttarakhand: CS holds meeting on landslide mitigation, directs installation of sensors in sensitive lakes

a
Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan held a meeting on Tuesday with the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, the Geological Survey of India (GSI), the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, the Central Water Commission, and other national institutions regarding landslide mitigation. The meeting discussed in detail the identification of landslide-prone areas and solutions to related problems.
Instructions Given to Develop a Prediction Model
The Chief Secretary directed all institutions to jointly develop a prediction model. Based on satellite images and ground observations, it will be used to predict the amount of rainfall that could trigger a landslide at a specific location. The objective is to ensure the safety of people by evacuating low-lying areas in time.
Instructions Given to Install Sensors in Sensitive Lakes
The meeting also decided to install sensors in 13 glacier lakes in the state. Initially, sensors will be installed after satellite and ground observations of six sensitive lakes. The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology will be provided assistance for this work by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, GSI, Central Water Commission, and other scientific institutions.
Assured of no funding shortage
Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan also assured of no funding shortage. Bardhan stated that this is a multi-institutional task and needs to be implemented seriously and with immediate effect to mitigate the impact of landslides and glacier lake disasters in the state.
