The protest that began in the Union Territory of Ladakh has escalated into violence, arson, and stone-pelting. The protesters demand full statehood for Ladakh. Four people died on September 24th during the protests, while at least 80 others were injured. It’s worth noting that social activist Sonam Wangchuk has been leading various protests for the past several months. Now, students have also taken to the streets in support.

In fact, during the protests, police and students clashed, resulting in the death of four people. Reports indicate that 40 police officers were injured. More police and paramilitary forces were deployed to bring the situation under control, and tear gas shells were also fired.

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor on Protests

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta strongly condemned the violence. He warned that strict action will be taken against those who disturb the peace here. The Lieutenant Governor said, “We know that in a democracy, everyone has the right to express their views.

Even hunger strikes are part of democratic traditions. But what we have seen in the last one or two days is that people are being provoked, comparisons are being made with Nepal and Bangladesh, attempts are being made to set private offices and homes on fire, and stone pelting is taking place. This is not the tradition of Ladakh.”
