An earthquake has once again wreaked havoc in East Asia. A magnitude 7.6 quake has struck the Philippines. The tremors have terrified residents in the Mindanao region of the Philippines. Last Thursday, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake also shook the earth. The previous quake killed 69 people. Although a weak tsunami was expected at the time, authorities have issued a devastating tsunami warning. They have stated that the wave height could be life-threatening, and people have been instructed to immediately evacuate.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the powerful earthquake struck the coastal waters of Manay, Davao Oriental, in the Mindanao region. The agency has also warned of possible damage and aftershocks. Residents in coastal towns in the central and southern Philippines have been advised to move to higher ground or seek shelter inland. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 62 kilometers (38.53 miles). Phivolcs has warned that waves of 1-2 meters high are possible within the next two hours.

The US Tsunami Warning System has also issued an alert that dangerous tsunami waves could hit coasts within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the earthquake’s epicenter. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first tsunami waves are expected between 9:43:54 and 11:43:54 local time (PST) on October 10, 2025. Phivolcs warned that these waves could continue for several hours. The institute said, “According to the local tsunami scenario database, wave heights could exceed one meter above normal tides, and could be even higher in the Gulf and Strait areas.”

Last earthquake killed 69 people
There are no immediate reports of major damage. Several earthquakes have struck the Philippines in the past few days. Last week, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Philippine province of Cebu, killing at least 69 people and injuring many more. The powerful tremor also caused the centuries-old St. Peter the Apostle Church to collapse.
