UKSSSC paper leak case: BJP pats itself on the back for exam cancellation, Congress says decision taken under pressure

The significant impact of the movement by unemployed youth in Uttarakhand is now clearly visible. The demands of the youth who had been protesting the paper leak in the graduate-level examination conducted by the Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC) for a long time have been met. The state government has decided to cancel the graduate-level examination held on September 21st. According to UKSSSC Chairman G.S. Martolia, the examination has been cancelled and will be rescheduled within three months.

This decision comes at a time when the Unemployed Association had clearly warned that if the examination was not cancelled, the next wave of protests would be even more widespread. The Unemployed Association had stated just two days ago that if the government did not listen to the youth, they would be forced to take to the streets across the state again.

MLAs also made demands: On October 9th, several BJP MLAs met Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and demanded the cancellation of the examination. The MLAs submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Dhami, stating that it was necessary to maintain the confidence of the youth by canceling the exam amid fears and complaints of a paper leak. Considering these circumstances, the government canceled the exam and has now intensified preparations for a CBI investigation into the paper leak.

A major decision in the interest of the youth: The BJP also welcomed the government’s initiative. BJP state media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has respected the sentiments of the youth. This decision demonstrates the government’s complete commitment to a transparent and fair recruitment process. Now, the youth should be confident that strict action will be taken against the culprits.

Government under pressure: The opposition has described this decision as a compulsion on the part of the government. Congress state spokesperson Garima Dasauni said that the government took this decision under constant pressure from the youth and the Congress party. She said that the government only woke up when the anger of the youth began to pour onto the streets. Had the government conducted an impartial investigation earlier, the youth would not have had to protest repeatedly. It is the government’s failure that recruitment scams are coming to light one after another in the state.

CBI investigation should begin soon: Following the government’s decision, the Uttarakhand Unemployed Association said that they welcome this decision. But simply canceling the exam does not end the matter.

We want a CBI investigation to begin soon and any officials, leaders, or institutions involved to be punished. Only then will this decision be meaningful. – Ram Kandwal, President, Uttarakhand Unemployed Association
