In fact, the actor’s father, C.L. Dheer, had assisted V. Shantaram for many years.

After that, he directed and produced films like “Bahu Beti,” “Rain Basera,” “Aakhri Raat,” and “Zindagi.” Pankaj Dheer recounted a tragic time in his family. This incident occurred during the making of Geeta Bali’s film “Rano.”

Pankaj explained that his father and Geeta Bali were co-producing the film “Rano.” Both had invested the same amount in the film. His father was also directing it. Six or seven days of work remained. Geeta suggested shooting her remaining scenes at the end. The entire film was ready, but only three days of Geeta Bali’s scenes were left. Call it bad luck or something else, Geeta Bali contracted smallpox in Punjab.

A promise made on her deathbed
Pankaj Dheer further explained, “Geeta was in Punjab with the rest of the crew and, upon discovering her illness, was brought to Mumbai. She couldn’t recover. On her deathbed, she asked my father to promise that after her death, he would leave the film. And my father kept his promise.”

A promise ruined everything
After Geeta Bali’s death, Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari persuaded Pankaj’s father to complete the remaining shooting with Meena. But he refused to break his promise to Geeta Bali and left the film unfinished. The money invested in the film was also lost, leaving the actor’s father completely alone. The family faced a very difficult time at that time.
