Evidence of the deep roots of bribery in government departments emerged on Thursday from Punjab. Here, Ropar DIG Harcharan Bhullar was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of five lakh rupees. Following the DIG’s arrest, the CBI began raiding the officer’s home. The findings at his home and other locations shocked everyone. Crores of rupees in cash, 1.5 kg of gold, and other items were recovered.
DIG Bhullar arrested while accepting a bribe of five lakh rupees
On Thursday, the CBI arrested Punjab Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Harcharan Singh Bhullar from his office in Mohali in connection with a corruption case. Bhullar, a 2007-batch IPS officer, is posted as DIG (Ropar Range). This range includes the districts of Mohali, Falehgarh Sahib, and Rupnagar.

Following his arrest, the CBI raided his Mohali home, where cash worth approximately five crore rupees was recovered. Official figures for the amount recovered from his home have not been released. It is being said that the amount could be even higher.

He was demanding a bribe from a businessman in a false case
He will appear in court today, October 17th, for the case in which he was arrested for accepting a bribe. According to reports, a businessman filed a complaint against the DIG at the Chandigarh CBI office on October 11th. He stated in the complaint that the DIG was threatening him and demanding a bribe.

A bribe of ₹8 lakh and ₹5 lakh per month was demanded
According to the businessman’s complaint, the DIG had filed a false case against him. To expunge the case, he was demanding a bribe of ₹8 lakh. He also demanded a monthly bribe of ₹5 lakh. Fed up, the businessman reported the matter to the CBI office. The CBI also laid a trap on the officer for 10 days. While the first installment of ₹5 lakh was being paid, the Chandigarh CBI arrested the officer red-handed while accepting the bribe.

CBI raids DIG’s premises
The raids have recovered ₹5 crore in cash, approximately 1.5 kg of gold, documents to more than 15 properties, 22 luxury watches, keys to Mercedes and Audis, foreign liquor, and several weapons. Furthermore, the investigation revealed that he also has investments in Chandigarh, Mohali, Ludhiana, and Solan, Himachal Pradesh.

Reports indicate that the CBI investigation is still incomplete. The team is currently gathering information about the DIG’s bank accounts, lockers, and properties registered in his wife’s name. This could lead to the discovery of even more cash.
