Thailand has been accused of playing ghostly sounds at night in the border area. They claim that Thailand is taking this action for psychological warfare, or to intimidate. Hun Sen stated that Cambodia’s Human Rights Commission has requested an investigation by the United Nations. According to him, since October 10th, loud and frightening sounds have been heard at night along the border, creating fear.

The terrifying sounds begin as night falls
According to the Independent’s report, as night falls, the sounds of crying children, barking dogs, clanking chains, and helicopters flying overhead begin to reverberate from near the border. These sounds are preventing people living near the border from sleeping peacefully and causing them to remain restless due to fear. This is particularly affecting the elderly, the sick, women, and children. These sounds are being played through loudspeakers, which reach across the border. The Child Rights Coalition Cambodia stated that these continuous noises are having a serious impact on children’s mental health.

According to The Nation, a Thai influencer, Kanawat Pongpaibalvech, stated that he created these strange noises and had received permission from the Thai Army. These noises were being broadcast to protect Thailand’s border. Tensions between the two countries began near Thailand’s Ta Moan Thom Temple in July, and these noises are now being heard from there.
South Korea also installs similar speakers

Similar to Thailand and Cambodia, when tensions escalate on the border between North Korea and South Korea, South Korea installs large loudspeakers. However, South Korea uses these speakers to broadcast propaganda against North Korea. These noises have often led to tensions between the two countries. Whenever relations between the two countries improve, South Korea removes these speakers, and they are reinstalled when tensions escalate.

What is the Cambodia-Thailand dispute?
The border dispute escalated after a ceasefire was brokered by Malaysia following fierce clashes between the two countries in July. Nearly 40 people were killed and thousands displaced. Both countries exchanged artillery and air strikes. This clash, considered the deadliest in 10 years, began near the Ta Moan Thom temple in Thailand’s Surin province. A ceasefire was later reached on July 28th after mediation by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and talks with US President Donald Trump.
