A racist slur from an aide to US President Donald Trump has been leaked. Trump nominated Paul Ingrassia to head the US Office of Special Counsel, the agency responsible for protecting federal whistleblowers and enforcing civil service rules. Paul Ingrassia is scheduled for a Senate hearing on Thursday. In his chats with Republicans, Paul made several comments, including saying the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday should be thrown into the seventh circle of hell and readily admitting to having Nazi tendencies. He also stated that Indians should not be trusted.

When were these chats from and what do they contain?

This Paul Ingrassia hates Black people and once said that Indians and Chinese people should never be trusted. Now that Trump has nominated him, his chats are going viral. They are filled with racism, Nazi support, and offensive language. These messages, obtained by Politico, come from a Republican group chat between the 2023-2024 term. In the chat, Ingrassia insulted Martin Luther King Jr., made racist comments against Black people, and described himself as having a “Nazi streak.” This comes just ahead of Thursday’s Senate confirmation hearing, raising questions about whether the nomination will be rejected.

What Ingrassia wrote in the chat that sparked a firestorm

According to the chat, Ingrassia wrote in January 2024, “MLK Jr. was the George Floyd of the 1960s and his ‘holidays’ should be abolished and he should be thrown into the seventh circle of hell where he belongs.” A participant replied, “Oh my God.” Using an Italian slur for Black people, Ingrassia had written in a group chat viewed by Politico a month earlier, “No malignant holidays… from Kwanzaa to MLK Jr. Day to Black History Month to Juneteenth.” He then added, “Every single one needs to be abolished.” According to the chat, in May 2024, the group discussed a Trump campaign staffer stationed in Georgia who was working to reach out to minority voters. When the first participant in Ingrassia’s chat wrote, “Paul is Übergruppenführer in the Hitler Youth with Steve Bannon,” referring to the paramilitary position in Nazi Germany and the Republican strategist. According to Chen, Ingrassia He replied, “I do have Nazi tendencies from time to time, I admit that.” A group member reported that Ingrassia’s comment was not taken as a joke, and that three participants confronted him during the conversation that day.

There is also hatred towards African people

Paul wrote in one place, “Why do some Republicans believe Democrats portray Black people as victims?” Ingrassia commented, “All of Africa is full of shit, and it will always be that way.” (During his first term, Trump used the term “shit-filled countries” to describe some African countries and Haiti.) The discussion surrounding the Nazi comment became serious in May 2024 when Ingrassia maintained his stance.

Who is Paul Ingrassia, whose nomination sparked controversy?

Paul Joseph Ingrassia is an American lawyer and political commentator who served as the White House liaison officer at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) until 2025. He also served as a liaison officer at the Department of Justice earlier that year. Ingrassia studied mathematics and economics at Fordham University before attending Cornell Law School, where he served as senior online editor for the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy. He is known for his conservative political views and has contributed writing to outlets like National Review and The Daily Caller. Ingrassia co-hosted a podcast and gained attention for controversial political commentary frequently quoted and shared by former President Donald Trump.

What will happen to Paul’s nomination now?

Paul Ingrassia’s nomination to lead the Office of Special Counsel is effectively deadlocked in the Senate, according to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who said Monday night that it is unlikely to pass. Florida Senator Rick Scott is already planning to vote against advancing Ingrassia’s nomination, responding to inquiries about whether the White House should withdraw Ingrassia’s nomination.
