Numerous raids have been conducted across the country and the world, garnering widespread attention. Some of these raids have even been made into films. In one raid, over 90 raids were conducted, while in another, trucks had to be called in to transport the money. Today, we will tell you the stories of four of the country’s biggest raids, which shook the nation and the world.
When the money had to be transported in trucks
This raid, considered the country’s largest ever, took place at the home of Dhiraj Sahu, owner of the liquor manufacturing company, Boudh Distilleries Private Limited, in Odisha. ₹352 crore was seized during the raid, which lasted for approximately 10 days. Furthermore, the Income Tax Department also called in three dozen machines to count the notes. After the raid, the seized money was loaded onto trucks and deposited at the department’s office under tight security.
When 750 tolas of gold were recovered
On July 16, 1981, a raid was conducted at the home of businessman Inder Singh of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Over 90 Income Tax officers and a team of 200 policemen raided Sardar Inder Singh’s residence. The raid lasted for nearly a month. Forty-five people were deployed in a separate room to count the money recovered. So much money was recovered that it took approximately 18 hours to count it. The raid yielded ₹1.60 crore (approximately $1.6 million). Furthermore, in addition to the cash, 250 tolas of gold, including two gold bricks, was also recovered. Jewelry worth approximately ₹8 lakh (approximately $1.85 lakh) was also recovered. Meanwhile, two bricks of 500 tolas of gold and 144 gold coins, weighing a total of 6,977 grams, were recovered from the residence of Sardar Inder Singh’s wife, Mohinder Kaur. This constituted a violation of the Gold (Control) Act, 1968. A total of 750 tolas of gold was recovered.
2,300 tolas of gold, ₹25,000,000, and 600 liters of sandalwood oil were found
The raid on perfume businessman Piyush Jain’s home had been ongoing since 2021. Crores of rupees worth of assets were recovered from his home, along with 23 kg of foreign gold. The raid, which lasted for more than 120 hours, resulted in the seizure of ₹250 crore in cash, 23 kg of gold, and 600 liters of sandalwood oil. The IT department was stunned by the sheer amount of money, and the employees were left sweating profusely counting the money. This is why this raid is considered one of the biggest in the country.
When Crores of Demonetized Rupees Were Found
In 2016, during a high-profile operation, the Income Tax Department raided the premises of two engineers and two contractors in Bengaluru. A total of ₹5.7 crore was recovered during this raid, of which ₹4.8 crore was in the form of new notes, while ₹90 lakh was found in the form of demonetized notes. Seven kilograms of gold and 9 kilograms of jewelry were also recovered during this raid, valued at ₹5 crore at the time. Furthermore, cars like a Porsche limousine and a Lamborghini were also found at the home of PWD engineer SC Jayachandra.
