TTE passed away after being accused of taking a bribe of Rs 50, after 37 years the court gave its verdict…

While checking tickets on a train, a TTE was accused of accepting a bribe of 50 rupees. The case reached the court. Hearings followed, and then the Imamala Tribunal, all the way to the Supreme Court. He received justice there, but sadly, he passed away before being acquitted. Thus, he remained unconvicted of bribery charges while alive. A long 37 years passed before the verdict was delivered.

The court ruled that the allegations could not be proven. Furthermore, it ordered that his legal heirs be paid his pension and other financial benefits within three months.

The case dates back to May 31, 1988. At that time, the Railway Vigilance team investigated and accused the TTE of accepting a bribe of 50 rupees from three passengers. It was reported that he had an additional 1254 rupees. He was also accused of discrepancies in his duty card.

Following this investigation, a charge sheet was filed in 1989, and he was dismissed from his job in 1996. In 2002, the Central Administrative Tribunal overturned this decision and ordered his reinstatement. The Railways challenged this case in the Bombay High Court, which in 2017 set aside the Tribunal’s order. However, now in 2025, the Supreme Court has set aside this High Court order and again acquitted the TTE. The court stated that the investigation did not prove the bribery allegations because one passenger was not examined and the other two passengers did not corroborate the allegations. Therefore, the Tribunal’s decision was correct, and its decision to set aside the penalty order was entirely justified.
