On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the formation of Uttarakhand, political activity regarding the state’s permanent capital has once again intensified. Former Almora MP and senior Congress leader Pradeep Tamta has clearly demanded that the government declare Gairsain as the permanent capital of Uttarakhand during the upcoming assembly session on November 3rd.

Pradeep Tamta stated that the demand for Gairsain as the permanent capital has been a public sentiment since the state’s formation. He stated that the government is convening a special session of the assembly on November 3rd and 4th, in which the President is scheduled to address. This occasion is a significant moment in the state’s history, and the government should take a decisive decision on the permanent capital.

The former MP stated that the assembly building and other necessary infrastructure were constructed in Gairsain during the Congress government’s tenure. The then Chief Minister Harish Rawat also approved ₹50 crore for the secretariat building. But the current BJP government has merely declared Gairsain the summer capital, making it a mere political formality, while the people of the state are still awaiting a permanent capital.

Tamta said that the capital is not merely an administrative center, but also a symbol of a state’s cultural, social, and emotional identity. He argued that Gairsain is geographically located in the central part of the state, representing the interests of both the mountain and plain regions equally.

He said that Uttarakhand is a mountainous state and its capital should also be in the mountains. If Gairsain is made the permanent capital, it will not only address regional imbalances but also give a new direction to the state’s identity.
