Recently, famous Bollywood singer Kumar Sanu filed a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife. He demanded ₹50 crore in compensation for the damage to his reputation. Meanwhile, his ex-wife, Rita Bhattacharya, has reacted to the notice sent by her husband. In an interview with the paparazzi, she accused her husband, Kumar Sanu, of abuse.

The defamation petition on behalf of Kumar Sanu was filed by his lawyer, Sana Raees Khan. It demands ₹30 lakh in compensation for damages and also seeks the removal of Bhattacharya’s interview from various platforms.

However, the wife stated that the amount mentioned in the notice she received is much higher than the actual amount. In an interview with Etimes, she said, “In the papers he sent me, he is demanding ₹50 crore. I don’t understand how Sanu can think I have that much money. It’s truly sad.”

She further added, “I am shocked. He is filing a case against the mother of his three adult sons. He is attacking me without attacking anyone else. He is filing a case against me, not against the other people who are spreading rumors and making inflammatory statements.”

Kumar Sanu has blocked Rita’s number
Rita alleged that Kumar Sanu abused her during her pregnancy. He didn’t give her food and even locked her in the kitchen. She claimed that she was subjected to abuse throughout her married life. In the interview, Rita alleged, “I never got a chance to talk to him. Neither I nor my children got a chance to talk to him because he always blocked us. I tried calling Sanu, but he never picked up. He has blocked us on his number.” ‘I will meet Sanu in court again after 31 years’ – Rita
Rita further said, “I contacted his secretary and requested him to stop all this; it is a huge insult. My son was getting married, and his in-laws were asking questions. I pleaded many times. I have all the messages and recordings on my phone. I am 63 years old, and I have to fight in court again. The first time he took me to court, I was pregnant with my son. Now again, at this age, I have to go through all this. I will meet Sanu in court after 31 years.”

‘Don’t harass us’
Bhattacharya said, “I will meet him in court, and I will plead with Sanu with folded hands – just try to be a good human being and be a father to my three children. If you cannot love us, at least stop harassing and bothering us.”

Divorce took place in 2001
It is worth mentioning that Kumar Sanu and Rita Bhattacharya were divorced in 2001. The petition states that in the settlement, both had agreed not to make allegations against each other in the future. The lawsuit against Bhattacharya alleges that in an interview in September 2025, she made allegations against the singer of starving her, denying her medical facilities, and locking her in the kitchen, which violated that agreement.
