In Pokhri, Chamoli district, a bear carried off a child from a school this Monday morning. Fortunately, the teachers and other children acted quickly and saved the child’s life. The child was rescued from the bushes and sustained claw marks.
Panic erupted at Harishankar Junior High School when a bear snatched Aarav, a sixth-grade student. Other children were terrified. While the children hid in a room, the bear even tried to break down the door. Seeing the bear attacking their classmate, some children and teachers bravely rushed to his rescue.
Thanks to the courage of the children and teachers, Aarav’s life was saved, but a climate of fear prevails at the school. Everyone is shaken. Seeing Aarav’s condition and the scene at the school, the children started crying. Just two days ago, a student from the same school was attacked by a bear on the way to school. Today, the bear entered the school premises.
Children going to school with forest guards
Meanwhile, in the hilly areas under the Thano Forest Range in Jolly Grant, children are being escorted to school by forest guards due to the threat of bears. A few days ago, two bears seriously injured a woman who had gone to collect grass in a field in Kameth (Sod) village of Gadul Panchayat. This has created a climate of fear throughout the area. Schoolchildren and women who go to the forest to collect fodder and firewood are particularly at risk.
Therefore, the Thano Forest Range has formed a six-member team of forest guards. This team is escorting children to schools located in bear-prone areas. Forest guards are also accompanying women who go to the forest for grass and firewood. Solar lights have been installed in bear-prone areas, and a cage has been set up to capture the bear.
