Bangladesh police have arrested a woman in connection with the attempted assassination of National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Mohammad Motaleb Sikder. The woman has been identified as Tanima (Tanvi), reportedly the joint member secretary of the Khulna district branch of the NCP’s youth wing, ‘Jubo Shakti’.
Meanwhile, the party held a protest rally on Tuesday demanding the arrest of those responsible for the murder of another student leader and coordinator of the Inqilab Manch, Usman Hadi. The killing of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das by a mob in the country has been strongly condemned by several prominent leaders, including UN chief Antonio Guterres, who demanded that the safety of minorities be ensured.
CR Abrar, an advisor to the country’s education ministry, met with the victim’s family to express his condolences and assured them of all possible support. In Sikder’s case, police claim he was shot at Tanima’s rented house in Khulna. Police found bloodstains and a bullet casing inside the house. Sikder is currently undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH), and his condition is reported to be out of danger.
Bullet near the left ear
KMCH Superintendent Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman said the bullet struck him near his left ear. Police have attributed the attack to a domestic dispute. Sikder had initially told police that he was shot by assailants on a motorcycle. An investigation is underway to determine who fired the shot at Sikder.
Inqilab Manch increases pressure in Hadi case: The Inqilab Manch held a protest rally in the capital on Tuesday demanding the arrest of those responsible for the murder of student leader Usman Hadi. Hadi founded the organization and served as its coordinator. The Inqilab Manch has demanded that Hadi’s killers be brought to justice before the national elections and referendum.
Shot on December 12
It should be noted that Usman Hadi was shot in the head by assailants on a motorcycle on December 12. Hadi died on December 16 while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Following this, violent protests, riots, and acts of vandalism erupted across the country. In this case, Bangladeshi legal advisor Asif Nazrul said that Hadi’s case would be tried in a Speedy Trial Tribunal.
He wrote in a Facebook post that a verdict would be ensured within 90 days. Home Ministry advisor Lieutenant General (retired) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that efforts are being made to arrest the main accused, Faisal Karim Masud. He said that this case is a top priority for the government.
ICT frames charges against Sheikh Hasina: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh on Tuesday framed charges against 17 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a case related to the disappearance of opponents during the Awami League regime.
According to a Daily Star report, the three-member tribunal read out four charges against the accused. The accused include Sheikh Hasina’s former defense and security advisor Major General Tariq Ahmed Siddiqui (retired) and 11 military officers.
Ensure the safety of minorities
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern over the increased attacks on minorities in Bangladesh in recent days and appealed for the safety of these communities to be ensured. Guterres said in a statement that all Bangladeshi citizens should feel safe.
We are all concerned by the violence in Bangladesh. He said that the safety of minorities should be ensured not only in Bangladesh but in every country. Meanwhile, Conservative Party MP Shiv Majumdar in Canada strongly condemned the killing of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das by a mob, saying that this incident will be recorded as a dark chapter in the history of Bangladesh.
He said that the incident in Mymensingh brought back memories of the era of dictatorship and oppression 50 years ago. He said that Bengali Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and other minorities in Bangladesh are constantly facing violence. Meanwhile, New York State Assembly Member Jennifer Rajkumar also expressed concern over the increasing attacks on minorities in Bangladesh and warned against the pattern of violence in the country. She said that in this time, we need to stand up for human rights, justice, and religious freedom.
