A strange case is emerging from the Mangaluru district of Karnataka. Here, a court has found a wife guilty of murdering her husband. However, despite this, she has neither been sentenced nor acquitted. She is also not allowed to return home. Let’s find out why the woman wasn’t sentenced and where she will be sent.
Wife Kills Husband with a Sword
This case is from the Belthangady police station area in Mangaluru district. Eliyamma, a resident of Navoor village, murdered her husband, Yohannan. On July 5, 2022, she killed him by cutting him with a sword. The police immediately took action and arrested the accused woman.
Wife Confesses to the Crime
During questioning, the woman confessed that she had killed her husband. Several people testified against Eliyamma in court. However, even after the charges were proven, she was not sentenced. The court delivered a special verdict in this case. The woman is suffering from a mental illness, which is why she was not sentenced.
‘The Woman Committed No Crime’
During the hearing, the accused woman’s lawyer, Vikram Raj A., argued in court that she had been suffering from a mental illness for a long time. Suffering from delusions, she did not understand that what she did was illegal and wrong. The lawyer argued that the woman had committed no crime. After hearing all the arguments, the court delivered a special verdict.
Court Sends Woman to Hospital
Judge Mohana J.S. ruled that the accused, despite being proven guilty of murder, is exempt from criminal liability. The court then ordered the jail superintendent to send the accused woman to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS).
The Woman Will Receive Treatment
There, the woman will receive treatment based on her condition. The court has also asked for a report from the institution, which should answer whether she is fit for release and whether she poses a threat to her own life or the lives of others.
