A 35-year-old groom and a 12-year-old bride; the parents forced them into marriage

Today, on one hand, our country boasts of becoming the fourth largest economy and makes claims of development and progress. On the other hand, in the same country, innocent young girls are still being subjected to child marriage. This reflects the prevailing mindset of society. One such case has come to light from Krityanand Nagar in Srinagar block. Here, the parents married off their 12-year-old daughter to a 35-year-old man. The marriage took place on January 7th.

Upon receiving information about this child marriage, the district administration immediately swung into action. The girl was rescued from her in-laws’ house, and further action was taken. The 12-year-old girl was married to Tinkoo Kumar, a 35-year-old man from Makaipur village, Kodha police station, in Katihar district. The marriage was forced upon the girl by her parents.

Taking cognizance of the matter, the District Program Officer formed a team. The girl has been presented before the Child Welfare Committee. The committee has directed that appropriate arrangements be made for the girl’s protection, rehabilitation, and education to secure her future.
