Questions raised about the credibility of Udham Singh Nagar police
The incident that unfolded on Sunday morning in Haldwani shocked everyone. Sukhwant Singh, a farmer from Kashipur, committed suicide by shooting himself in a hotel in the Kathgodam police station area. Before dying, the deceased made an emotional video in which he accused several property dealers of defrauding him of four crore rupees. In the video, the victim stated that he had gone to the ITI police station and the Paiga outpost to file a complaint, but no action was taken. When he received no response, he approached the Udham Singh Nagar SSP’s office, but his hopes were dashed there as well.
Allegations of police being bribed with 30 lakh rupees to suppress the case
The police allegedly harassed farmer Sukhwant Singh mentally and made him sit in the police station for hours. They also mistreated him. After making numerous rounds to the police station, outpost, and SSP’s office without any resolution, the farmer took this drastic step. In the video he made before his death, the victim also revealed that the police had been bribed with 30 lakh rupees to suppress the case. In his last words, with a trembling voice, Sukhwant Singh narrated the entire sequence of events, explaining the circumstances that forced him to take his own life. Sukhwant Singh’s last rites were performed in his village on Monday morning.
CM orders magisterial inquiry
Following the escalation of the matter, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took cognizance of the incident and ordered a magisterial inquiry. Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat will now investigate the case. The Chief Minister has made it clear that whoever is found guilty will not be spared.
Udham Singh Nagar SSP takes major action
Following the escalation of the matter, Udham Singh Nagar SSP Manikant Mishra has taken major action. The SSP has suspended the ITI police station in-charge and a sub-inspector. Several others have also been transferred to the police lines. Even after this action, many questions are being raised about the working style of the police, as a man lost his life due to police negligence. The farmer’s last video is sending shivers down people’s spines. Many questions are being raised: Is the Uttarakhand Police neglecting law and order and instead involved in land deals? Or have the roots of corruption become so strong in the state that it has become difficult for ordinary citizens to get justice?
