Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan was on a visit to Uttarakhand yesterday. During his visit, Vice President Radhakrishnan met with former Uttarakhand Chief Minister and former Union Minister Major General (Retd.) B.C. Khanduri in Dehradun. The Vice President visited him at his residence in Dehradun, where he inquired about his health.

Vice President Radhakrishnan reminisced about his old days with Major General Khanduri when they served together as Members of Parliament. He shared fond memories of working together in Parliament and recounted a special anecdote. He said that during his time as an MP, he had requested the then Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Major General Khanduri, to convert some important state highways in Tamil Nadu into national highways, a request that Major General Khanduri readily accepted.

The Vice President expressed his gratitude to Major General Khanduri for his visionary decisions. He highlighted how the expansion of roads had transformed the industrial landscape of Tamil Nadu. The Vice President appreciated Major General Khanduri’s support and foresight, stating that the road improvements he spearheaded helped the Coimbatore region emerge as a major industrial hub.

Major General (Retd.) B.C. Khanduri is a distinguished officer of the Indian Army. He served the nation with utmost dedication and honor for over three decades. He was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) for his exceptional services. After retiring from the army, he entered public life and played a significant role in shaping the development and administration of Uttarakhand. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand twice. Khanduri also held important responsibilities in the central government. Under the leadership of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he served first as a Minister of State with independent charge and later as a Cabinet Minister in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

During his tenure, Major General Khanduri played a crucial role in advancing the Golden Quadrilateral and the National Highways Development Programme (NHDP), which transformed India’s road infrastructure and connectivity.
