In a statement to the media, Baraiya linked the serious crime of rape to caste discrimination and religious interpretations. The Congress MLA claimed that women from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) are targeted due to a supposedly flawed and distorted interpretation of ancient texts. This statement has now drawn sharp criticism from the public.
‘When a very beautiful girl is seen, attention gets diverted’ – Baraiya
In the viral video, the Congress MLA says, “The theory of rape is that any man, regardless of his mindset, is walking on the road. If he sees a very beautiful girl, an extremely beautiful girl, his mind can get distracted, and then rape can happen.” To justify sexual violence, the Congress MLA also resorted to caste-based explanations.
Argument given on rape of women from tribal communities
He further said, “Rape mostly happens to women from tribal communities, whose women are considered very beautiful, and also to women from Scheduled Castes, whose women are also considered very beautiful. He said that OBC women are also very beautiful, and that is why they are raped more often. Why does rape happen? Because such instructions are given in their religious texts.”
Baraiya’s disgusting statement
Baraiya further said that having sexual relations with a woman of a particular caste earns the merit of a pilgrimage. And with a woman of another caste, the merit of a different pilgrimage is obtained. Since they cannot actually go to those pilgrimage sites mentioned in the scriptures, they have the option of staying at home, catching these women, and having sexual relations; they will get their reward.”
The MLA defended his disgusting statement
Even after this, the Congress MLA did not stop. When asked about this statement given to the media, Baraiya did not back down from his statements and offered a series of absurd defenses. He claimed that these comments were not part of the video. He said that his statement was presented out of context.
