In Finland, the government of Prime Minister Sanna Marin suffered a huge defeat, the right-wing opposition achieved a big victory.
Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s government has suffered defeat in the general elections held in Finland. The National Coalition Party, led by right-wing leader Peteri Orpo, not only defeated Marin’s centre-left Social Democrat Party (SDP) in the election, but also pushed it to third place.
While the Conservative Party of Peteri Orpo got 20.8 percent of the vote in this election, another right-wing party, the Populist Finns Party (PFP), got 20.1 percent. On the other hand, Sanna Marin’s party definitely increased its seats in this election, but its party could garner only 19.9 percent votes.
Sanna Marin remains one of the most popular politicians in Finland. However, his popularity did not prove to be enough to win the party the elections. Marin admitted his party’s defeat just after the Conservative Party claimed victory.
Tough competition was seen in exit polls
Significantly, exit polls in Finland were showing a tough fight between all the three parties. This was clearly visible in the election results as well. However, the National Coalition Party of Peteri Orpo took a huge lead over the other two parties. After the results, Orpo said that the people of Finland want to see some changes and I will compromise with all the parties only for these changes.
Meanwhile, Rikka Purra, leader of the right-wing Finns party, who came second, congratulated the NCP and said she was very happy with her party’s performance. He said that his party has become the main opposition party to the party that topped the polls. Getting seven more seats in the elections is a tremendous result in itself.
