IPL 2023: Ashwin stuck in explaining the rules, fined for violating IPL code of conduct

Rajasthan Royals off- spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was on Thursday fined 25 per cent of his match fee for breaching the Indian Premier League’s code of conduct during their match against Chennai Super Kings. Ashwin was fined for breaching Rule 2.7 of the IPL Code of Conduct during the match. His team won the match by three runs on Wednesday night.
“Under Rule 2.7 of the IPL Code of Conduct, Ashwin admitted a Level 1 offense. The decision of the Match Referee for Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct is final and binding,” the IPL said in a statement.
The statement does not specify the nature of the offense but Rule 2.7 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials relates to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to, an incident involving a match or an incident involving a player, team official, match official”. “
After the match, Ashwin had said that he was surprised by the decision of the umpires to change the ball on their own due to dew in Chepauk on Wednesday and there should be consistency while taking such decisions. Heavy dew forced the umpires to intervene and change the ball during the Super Kings’ chase at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, leaving Ashwin “surprised” after taking two for 25 in the match.
Ashwin said that he had never seen the umpires changing the ball when there was too much dew. He said in the post- match press conference, “It was surprising that the umpires changed the ball on their own due to dew. It had never happened before and I was surprised. To be honest, this time in the IPL I’m a little surprised by some of the decisions that have been made.”
Ashwin, who was named man of the match, said, “I mean to say that I am surprised because it can have good or bad results. So I think you need to have a little balance.” He said, “Our team was bowling and we didn’t ask to change the ball. But the umpires changed the ball on their own accord. I asked the umpire and he said we (umpires) can do that.”
“So I hope they can change it whenever there is dew. You can do whatever you want but you need to set a standard,” Ashwin said.
