WFI Elections: Gauhati High Court ban on Indian Wrestling Federation elections, elections were to be held on July 11
The Gauhati High Court has stayed the election of the Wrestling Federation of India. Earlier these elections were to be held on July 11, but now it has been put on hold. This ban has been imposed on the demand of Assam Wrestling Association. On Wednesday (June 21), the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) ad-hoc committee had extended the elections to the Wrestling Federation of India by five days. Earlier these elections were to be held on July 6, which was changed by the Ad-hoc Committee to July 11, but now these elections will not be held on July 11 as well.
In fact, five unaffiliated state bodies presented their case at the hearing seeking voting rights for elections. For this reason the ad hoc committee had to take this decision. However, on which demand of Assam Wrestling Association this decision has been taken, it could not be confirmed.
Why were the elections postponed till July 11
On Wednesday, the three-member committee was approached by unaffiliated state bodies in Maharashtra, Haryana, Telangana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. Retired High Court Justice MM Kumar is included in this committee. The committee had called these units for hearing.
“The state units presented their case, while the representatives of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) defended their decision to disaffiliate these bodies,” a source told news agency PTI. Time was needed, so the elections were postponed till July 11.
Top wrestlers performed
India’s top wrestlers have been protesting for days for the election of the Wrestling Federation and against the removal of office bearers including President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers had accused some of the team’s coaches, including Brij Bhushan Sharan, of sexual harassment.
Wrestlers sat on dharna for the first time on January 18
The country’s top wrestlers were openly fighting against Brij Bhushan Singh for 138 days. For the first time on January 18, the wrestlers sat on strike and on April 23 started the strike for the second time. After this the wrestlers faced the weather, clashed with the police. There was also an FIR against the wrestlers, but the protests continued. However, after a meeting between the wrestlers and Home Minister Amit Shah, the story changed and the wrestlers returned to work. After that, in the meeting held with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, many issues were discussed and some matters were agreed upon. Then the wrestlers agreed not to protest till June 15.
Ruckus happening right now for trials of Asian Games and World Championship
There is a lot of uproar over the exemption from the trials of the Asian Games to the wrestlers who accused the former President of the Wrestling Federation of India and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment. It was earlier opposed by former Olympic medalist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt. After this some other people also opposed it. On this, the wrestlers protesting including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik attacked them. However, now this matter has increased. Some people are accusing the wrestlers of taking exemption under the garb of protest. On this, Vinesh now exposed the whole matter by sharing the letter. He wrote that the relaxation given to the wrestlers protesting in the trials was not demanded by them in the letter written to the Sports Ministry.
