Glenn McGrath furious over TV umpire’s decision on Mitchell Starc’s catch
The controversy that started over the catch of Mitchell Starc in the second Test match of the Ashes series being played at Lord’s between England and Australia is not taking its name to stop. By the end of the day’s play, a brilliant catch by Stark gave rise to a new controversy. Australia’s veteran players have now started raising questions on the TV umpire’s decision. Former fast bowler Glenn McGrath has called the umpire’s decision the biggest nonsense.
In the second last over of the fourth day of the match, England batsman Ben Duckett played a shot in the air towards fine leg off bowler Cameron Green. Mitchell Starc, standing on fine leg, ran to the left and caught this catch by flying in the air. After taking the catch, Mitchell Starc also indicated out, the field umpire declared the batsman out.
Batsman Ben Duckett was returning, however only then the umpire stopped him and the catch was referred to the TV umpire. The TV umpire declared Ben Duckett not out after watching the replays. The TV umpire believed that the ball had touched the ground and it was also visible in the replays.
McGrath said that if Ben Duckett is not out, then all the catches taken so far should not be out. In a conversation with the BBC, McGrath said, “This is the biggest nonsense I have ever seen.” Stork had gained control of the ball, so if he is not out, any other catches taken so far must be not out. It is ridiculous to say that he is not in control of the ball, he has controlled it with two hands and everyone saw it.
For England, the catch of Ban Duckett can be the turning point of the match as Duckett is looking in good rhythm. He is unbeaten on 50 off 67 balls with the help of six fours. Captain Ben Stokes is also unbeaten on 29 off 66 balls with the help of one four and one six.
