Emergency in Myanmar after the coup in 2021
The army carried out a coup in Myanmar on 1 February 2021. Many leaders including the popular leader and State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint were arrested. After this, military leader General Min Aung Hlaing declared himself the Prime Minister of the country. The army had declared a 2-year emergency in the country.
Actually, general elections were held in Myanmar in November 2020. Of these, Aung San Suu Kyi’s party won 396 seats in both the houses. Whereas the opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party won only 33 seats in both the houses. This party had the support of the army.
After the results came, the army raised questions on it. The army had accused Suu Kyi’s party of rigging the elections. Differences between the government and the army started after the election results, after which the army carried out a coup.
